MUSKEGON RESCUE MISSION TURNS CATALYST SAVINGS INTO MEALS FOR THOSE IN NEED

Since 1907, Muskegon Rescue Mission (MRM) has helped thousands of families and individuals in times of need. MRM operates two shelters in West Michigan: one for men, another for families, women and children. In addition to those who seek assistance from MRM directly, Muskegon Rescue Mission receives hundreds of referrals from churches, community agencies, police, area businesses, and the Department of Human Services each year.

THE CHALLENGE

With summer temperatures averaging 75°F, Muskegon Rescue Mission relies on rooftop HVAC units (RTUs) to keep its shelter guests comfortable. This necessity carries a high cost. RTUs use more energy than any other cooling technology, costing the ministry money that could be better allocated towards providing food and other essentials.

CLEAResult, a firm specializing in energy solutions, sought to conduct a trial on the CATALYST RTU retrofit in Michigan. The company identified an opportunity to work with the Muskegon Rescue Mission on a CATALYST pilot project, putting the technology to the test while benefitting a deserving cause.

THE SOLUTION

CLEAResult retrofitted five rooftop HVAC units at the Laketon Avenue shelter facility with the CATALYST RTU upgrade kit (one 12.5-ton unit, one 10-ton unit, and three 8.5-ton units). The CATALYST system would empower Muskegon Rescue Mission to monitor and control its HVAC 24/7 via the eIQ Platform.

To MRM, these savings were more than a line on their energy bill; every $2 the ministry saved on energy can go towards putting food on the plate of a hungry man, woman or child.

In the words of Brent Richards, MRM’s Director of Operations, “By making us more efficient, you have affected hundreds if not thousands of people in the future.”

POWERFUL RESULTS

Annual Cost Savings:

  • Nearly $5,000

Average Electric Savings:

  • 47% Annually

Average Gas Savings:

  • 10% Annually

FROM THE CLIENT

“I spent 28 years in the mechanical field as an owner/operator of a small business. I have seen and used other systems that claim to work like the CATALYST, so when I was approached about installing it at our Laketon facility, I had a preconceived idea of what it would be. It literally took less than a week for me to realize this system was far superior to anything I had experienced before.

I love the CATALYST system and everything it does for us, it has made a very big impact on not only our energy cost and savings, but what an awesome diagnostics and repair tool the eIQ Platform provides.”
